Strength & Ability VS Knowledge & Understanding

Just because you CAN do a move, doesn’t always mean you’re ready for the next level.

One of the biggest misconceptions in pole and aerial training is that being strong enough to perform higher-level tricks automatically means you’re ready for a higher-level class.

Strength and ability aren’t the same as knowledge and understanding.

There’s so much more to progression than achieving individual tricks.

Understanding why we use certain grips, how contact points support our weight, which muscles need to be engaged and why we enter and exit moves in particular ways is just as important as being able to perform the move itself.

These are the skills and principles we develop throughout our classes, and they’re not always obvious when watching someone perform a trick.

Someone may have the strength to achieve an advanced move but still have gaps in the foundational knowledge needed to perform it consistently, safely and with control.

That’s why we don’t base class levels on the hardest trick someone can do.

Our classes are designed to build on one another, developing not just physical ability but technical understanding, body awareness and the ability to recognise and manage risk.

There’s no shame in attending a lower-level class, even when you’re capable of more challenging moves. In fact, revisiting and refining your foundations is often what makes you a stronger, more confident and more capable student.

Progression isn’t about getting into the highest-level class as quickly as possible. It’s about developing the skills, knowledge and understanding to belong there.

At MVPA, we teach for long-term progression, not just the next impressive trick…
